Polyaspartics garage floor coatings verses other types

Polyaspartic garage floor coatings take about a single day to install. They therefore are regarded as one of the best types. With other types, including metallic epoxy floor coating and garage epoxy floor coating, the installer will spend about 4 to five days to install.

Installing a floor coating is not that easy: one requires going out to measure the moisture vapor emission rate and the condition of concrete.

Each of the floor coatings, whether garage epoxy floor coating, metallic epoxy floor coating or polyaspartic garage floor coatings, has some advantages and disadvantages that the homeowner has to live with.

The advantages of polyaspartic garage floor coatings make poxy/polyurethane systems undesirable. However, epoxy system proves to be resistant to very high moisture vapor emission rates -- as high as 18 pounds. Although polyaspartic coatings has very quick cure (10 minutes to 45 minutes depending on solid content, temperature on the surface and product chemistry), they are blamed as not getting the deep penetration achieved by their epoxy counterparts.

Epoxies are proven successful on trucking facilities, airplane hangers, and commercial kitchens. They are said to produce better quality compared to the polyaspartic systems.

However, epoxies also come in different types, each of which is better for different situations.

For those considering polyaspartic systems, these systems are indeed very tough. They achieve a good cost-to-performance ratio and fit for a high-performance coating specifications and considerations.

Polyurea is much more flexible than epoxy. It is mainly applied for spray-on bed liners, interior pipe coating, liquid containment lining, tunnel coatings and fillers for joints, as well as many other industrial applications.

However, you might have to live with a number of limitations, for instance reaction speed.

First, rapped bubbles, blisters, and lap lines might become visible if the coatings set before application is complete.
They are also very slippery when wet even at 3 to 5 mils of thickness. Although it does achieve the ASTM coefficient of friction when dried, it does not when wet.

For this reason, they might be undesirable if being used on surfaces that are going to be wet periodically.

Other problems relate to removal and require installation by someone who has extensive floor coating experience. They are tough to remove repair if problems occur during application.
